Als Gentransfer wird die Übertragung von Genen von einem Organismus auf einen anderen bezeichnet. Es wird unterschieden zwischen:

• Weitergabe von Erbmaterial von einem Individuum an einen Nachkommen: vertikaler Gentransfer (VGT).
• Übertragung von einem Organismus in einen bereits existierenden anderen: lateraler oder horizontaler Gentransfer (LGT bzw. HGT)
• Übertragung von Genmaterial eines Endosymbionten (Chloroplast, Mitochondrium etc.) auf den Zellkern der ihn enthaltenden eukaryotische Zelle (Wirtszelle) bis hin zum Totalverlust: endosymbiotischer Gentransfer (EGT) – siehe auch Chloroplast §Endosymbiotischer Gentransfer
• Übernahme von Genmaterial eines toten Organismus, siehe Anachronistische Evolution
